9/3/14 – Designing my Blog

What I Did

Today, I changed a few things to customize my blog. First, I added categories for my posts to organize them. I also added a widget that would let people follow my blog. I also started to work on a menu for my site and updated the theme of my blog.

Why I Did It

When choosing my widgets, I chose to only add the “follow” option for now because I didn’t want to overwhelm my site. When I changed my theme, I chose one that better highlighted my main header image that I took while in Italy. In my current theme, the image takes up most of the first screen the viewer sees. I did this to keep the spatial and visual elements of multimodal design in mind – my main image is what takes up the most space in the design of the page.

Number 2

What I did…

Since our last meeting I added the pages for our additional projects in class, set up my about me page and then set up my site information page. For now the names of all my pages and posts are generic, but I plan on coming up with something more creative. I decided for my about me page to explain what I am majoring in, my activities in school and what I do for fun.

Why I did it…

I tried to keep my blog as simple and easy as possible. Like I have said all along I enjoy simplicity, clean and neat posts. For the titles I may do something clever like they did with the Friends’ episodes where they all began with “The one with…,” but I am not in love with anything just yet. I decided to give a basic background about myself because I want to leave it open for me to go back and change depending on the rest of the semester.

What I did

Today I toyed with menus a bit (to not much success, not sure if I’m inhibited by my ignorance or this theme). I also added three new pages, one for each project we will do this semester. That’s pretty much it!

Why I did it

I toyed with the menus because I wanted to move the “home” link in the upper left hand side of the blog to a location where it would be more visible. Another solution to this would be to change the font color, but I’m not sure whether I can do this or not without paying. More exploration to follow. I added the pages in anticipation of the projects we will be doing. I guess I’ve taken one step that I won’t have to worry about later.

Day One: The Summary

What I Did

    In short, I:

  • Created this blog
  • Made questionable decisions regarding picture choices
  • Set up some security features
  • Came up with a temporary tagline
  • Made my name based on a previously successful blogging moniker

Why did I do it the way I did?

I would have to say my decisions today were largely colored by the thought that I’ll be messing around with the html and design once I’ve had some time to go over a few more tutorials. The structure and overall theme of the blog will grow to reflect the theme of the writings in it over time and it will eventually (I say optimistically) be modified into a site with some sense of cohesion.

not a week for the weak

Instead of telling you what I did today, because it’s so early and my life has yet to get too shambly, I’ll go into what a week of my life usually looks like. Last week was the first week of classes, and while everyone usually expects the first week to be rough, mine was laughably tragic. It started out on Monday when I lost my debit card and Hokie Passport. A frazzled mess, I wandered around the bookstore, hoping to uncover them and actually walk out with the several hundred dollars of pages required of a moneyless college student. Tuesday, I was rudely awakened to the horrors of trying to find a parking spot on downtown Roanoke Street, and ended up walking to the gym and back to avoid a fistfight for a spot the girl in apartment J had been enviously eyeing. Wednesday seemed to be looking up as I was surrounded by my best friends, dancing the night away, on top of the world (or on top of a tall bench in our case). The feeling was short-lived as I found myself tumbling down, sprawling on the floor, and shattering my phone in the cool night air. There were laughs and tears booming through Blacksburg at the poor, unfortunate, phoneless girl on the ground. But I did not let that slow me down. Thursday I actually left my parking spot to go to the Math Emporium and revive my dead phone. I waited for two hours until some kind man came to inform me that no one would show up, the business was gone, and there were no other places in the Valley to fix my problem.

When it comes to my phone, there is a determination in me that will not die. I was not going to become an anti-social hermit, and I spent the entire day trying to find a solution to this dire problem. Needless to say, my phone was fixed and blown up with social media by six o’clock that evening.  Since I had been out so late, though, I was forced to park in a tiny spot in the corner of my apartment complex. I was grateful, but I had a bad feeling about why that spot was open while other cars were parked on the street. Which brings us to Friday– the day I backed my car into a parked car and completely ruined my bumper. The day I got stung by a bee walking to class. The day I left my keys in my apartment and was locked out for an hour. The day that I realized my life is such a wonderful mess that I decided to write a blog about it and share my hilarious misfortune with the world. It’s never a dull moment.

First Blog Post

What I Did

Today, I set up my WordPress blog for ENGL 3844. However, I only made a few minor changes for the time being. I plan on changing many more features of my blog as we go further into the semester. I will be exploring the various features of WordPress in order to become more familiar and effective with the site. I took care of entering my basic information such as my name, email and username. One change I made was making the background red. I also decided on the theme “Edin.”

Why I Did It

I made the background red because it’s my favorite color. I decided on the theme “Edin” because I liked the neat, professional look it gives off. Also, I have decided to name my blog “Nokes’ Notes.” The reason for this is because it identifies me personally and is also catchy. I look forward to my blog developing into a piece of work I can be proud of.

Getting Started

Creating my web portal is just the first step in my on-going work process in Writing and Media Media. I plan to build a custom web portal that fits with the type of brand I would like to portray to the public which will be kept minimal with warm colors. I also want this web portal to be a presentable place for me to keep a portfolio of my work done in this class.

What I Did & Why I Did It

So far I’ve named the blog “Orbezo” because it’s my last name and I identify myself with it since some people call me by my last name. Some people can’t pronounce it, too. It’s also a very rare last name, so it came as no surprise that it wasn’t already taken as a blog name. I also chose a theme, though I may change it later. I would like a theme that’s simple and focuses on photographs more than anything since I’m going to be creating plenty of graphics. I’m also planning to create a custom logo very soon. I think logos are not only professional, but really define the uniqueness of a website design.

the big decisions

What I did

Since I have never used WordPress before, this is a learning experience for me. The first decision I made was to make my URL knappas.wordpress.com. After deciding on my URL, I was a little overwhelmed with what I had to do to create my website. I had a few ideas for titles, but wasn’t sure. I then went to themes and picked Hemingway Rewritten. I then named my blog “Since 1994.” With my title and theme in place, I uploaded a picture that I took for the header. I still have to work on a tagline and update my personal information, but for my first time using WordPress, I’ve made progress.

Why I did it

Since I was unsure about my title, I skipped naming my blog at first. I wanted to have a better idea about what my website was going to look like before I named it. I’m a visual person in this sense. For this reason, I looked at the free themes and immediately liked Hemingway Rewritten because of the heading format with the title embedded in the picture. After seeing this theme, I thought about businesses that have the year they were founded in the format “Since…” I was born in 1994, so I chose the title “Since 1994.” I might change my title if I have another idea, but for now, I am happy with the theme and title.

Initial Decisions

What I Did

I designed my blog with a simple theme to help the reader easily read my blog, all while having a dash of color and personality to spice up my projects.

I picked simple, pastel earth toned colors for the main colors of my theme. For the fonts, I kept the font as Times New Roman and the basic black font. I added a couple pictures with a nature background, as well as some personal photos.

I chose the title “Through Hannah’s Eyes” and picked the tagline “Finding meaning through words and pictures”.

Why I Did It

When deciding how I wanted my blog for my Writing and Digital media class, I opted to go for something simple yet creative. I want my projects and writing to stand out on there own with the design of the blog to accentuate the projects.

I chose colors that reflected my personality and were also simple enough that they didn’t take away from my writing. I chose some nature photos that I took this summer to show my love for being outside as well as mimicking the earth tones I selected for my blog. Adding some personal photos helps to give the reader an insight as to who I am, and identify with my writing.

I chose the title because I felt that it had a focus that was direct as well as personal. All of my project for this class will have my personality reflected throughout the work, so I wanted to keep that personal focus. I had this same idea in mind for my tagline which has a focus on the work of incorporating words and images, but also has a personal touch.
