What I did

Today in class, I added a twitter widget to my page. I’m also thinking about customizing the image that is the background of the page.

Why I did It

I added the twitter widget to my page because I think that it really gives my page a more personal touch. Visitors to the site can see what I’m sharing and doing on social media. I’m also thinking about changing the image to give the page a more personal feel. If I choose the image, then it makes the site more feel more like myself.

Busy busy busy

I haven’t done anything major to my blog since the last post, but I have begun to master the use of the website itself. They call me the Gutenburg of wordpress. While I have not produced much noticeable work on my blog, I have been slaving away in many other areas of my studentship and life in general. I’m learning spanish, poorly, and feminism, with trepidation. I have done more homework in the first week of my senior year of college than I did in an average month during junior year. Whether this speaks to me being an incredibly busy senior, or a very lazy junior, I have yet to decide. I lust after naps for I haven’t slept since summer ended.

Day 2: Design

What I Did

Today, I made a few more changes to my overall webpage. I have updated and added 2 static pages: an About Me page and a Site Information page. In the About Me page, I included another profile picture and a short blurb about me and the reasoning behind the blog. While I have not added any resources to my Site Information page, I hope to keep it updated in the future. Lastly, what I am most proud of, I have added a Twitter feed widget to my site on my sidebar.

Why I Did

The reasoning behind the static pages is because they are essential to any blog out there on the Internet. There should always be a page for readers to access in order to learn more about the author, and offering resources is another great way to keep readers engaged. I kept everything short in my updates, and plan to later expand in detail on both pages. However, I think the short blurbs are consistent with my minimalist designs.

I added the Twitter feed because I thought it would be a fun visual addition for viewers. Not only does it add visual appeal, but it also gives readers a more in depth glimpse into who I am outside the blog.

So as I stated in my last post, I like to keep things simple.  I changed my default picture, but it was a lot harder than I actually thought it would be.  That made me a little sad, but oh well.  I know some of the other students are adding pages to their blogs; however, I do not want to add pages until I have content to fill them with.  In my creative writing class, we are writing a series of short texts such as poetry or recipes.  Perhaps I will add those on various pages once I’ve written them.

In summary…

What I did:

  • add a post
  • changed my picture
  • commented on other’s posts

Why I did it:

  • my old picture was no longer showing up
  • it was assigned to me

Although I do not have a lot of meaning to my changes just yet, I know that there will be great things to come of this blog in the future!

9.3.14

What I Did

Since Monday, I have changed the header, menu, footer, and number of pages on my blog. I switched the header from the default photo to a picture of sunflowers that I found on CreativeCommons. I increased the number of pages on my blog from two to six. Originally there was “home” and “about me,” and I added “Class Projects,” “Interrogate an Interface,” “Remix a Story,” and “Revision Plan.” In short, I added all the pages for what will go on this blog. Once these pages were added, I was able to edit the menu. It now has three headers, “Home,” “About Me,” and “Class Projects.” Class Projects is a drop down menu that leads to the remaining three pages. On the footer I added a search bar and the place where users can subscribe to the blog.

Why I Did It

I changed the header to sunflowers because they’re my favorite flower, and I’ll like the look of the blog with them at the top. They’re bright and happy, which sets a good tone. I added the pages mentioned above to set the blog up to be ready to use. With the pages already there, all I’ll need to do is add the content when it comes time. I added the search bar to the footer to be able to easily find posts and topics, and I added the subscription to the bottom because it’s important to have it there but doesn’t need to be at the top because I’m not trying to push subscription right now.

Customizing my page

What I did

Today I felt much more comfortable with WordPress. I started by renaming my blog, it’s a simple title “Zack Conway’s Blog” but for now that’s all I want it to say. I may come up with a more creative name later. The other big change I made today was adding a new background. I wanted more than just a solid color, I wanted a picture. I also wanted to make sure I stayed with the theme of my header. I then decided to choose a new header photo. It is still of Lane Stadium, but instead of being a dark/night picture it is during the day.

Why I did it

So there are a couple different reasons why I did what I did today on my WordPress. First the reason I changed my blog’s name is because I wanted it to be simple and something someone can easily identify it with. It’ll be easy to know who’s blog it is just by reading the title. Next, the reason I chose the background that I did was not only because it was intriguing and drew attention, but also because it added to my theme and gave my blog more character and an insight on me as a person. I can understand why some may think it is a little too much, but for right now it fits what I am trying to do. And lastly, I chose a light/day time photo because I wanted something lighter on the page. The background is already dark, so having something lighter was needed.

Day 2 Design

What I Did

Today in class I wanted to customize my blog further so that it reflected my own personality. I changed the color scheme to a more neutral, yet colorful theme. I chose a purple background and a header photo of the Italian coast where I visited this summer.

I also uploaded a user photo, created an “About Me” section, and added more personal photos to the page. In the about me section I explained the purpose for my blog and a little background information about myself.

Why I Did It

I added a user photo so that there was more color and personality to my blog. The “About Me” section lets the reader know who the person is behind the posts, and gives the site another dimension because it is a separate page. I also included the reason for the blog because if someone where to find this blog, they would probably not immediately know the reason behind the blog.

A Makeover

What I Did

Today I made several changes to my blog, including changing the header photo, as well as updating some widgets. I also completely re-vamped my “About” page, which is now titled “About Leslie.”

Why I Did It

All of the updates I made today had a rhyme or reason. First off, I changed my header photo to a scenic picture that I took in Italy of a park that was at the top of a famous hill in the small town that I lived in for a month – Urbino. I chose this for two reasons: one, it is a generic, pretty view. Two, it works nicely with the title text, whereas the old picture I had looking down on the city of Florence was pretty busy with the words overlaid on top of it. The next update I made was to my widgets. I added an email sign-up page so that people without a WordPress account can follow my blog. I did this for my Italy blog and it worked very well for some of my older relatives that are not tech-savy. I also added two links to my blogroll: my Linked In profile and my other blog link. This is so that people can learn more about me. The calendar widget is nice to have for my sake, as well as my readers’ sake to keep up with things as I make new posts. I also added a search function that might be useful. The next major addition I made to my page was my “About Leslie” page. I wrote about this year, my summer, what I study, and my use of the blog. I also added a picture of me for reference.

Mostly Just Thinking

What I Did and Why I Did It (Or Didn’t)

I didn’t really do much today, as I’m pretty fond of the way my blog looks and is working. I considered changing my theme and the background color. However, I decided that adding a background color in the theme I chose (Kelly) made the text section pop very aggressively, and made the whole thing seem a bit narrow. I didn’t really like the effect, so I decided not to change it. I also decided that some of the other customizations, both with appearance and categorization, will be more appropriate once I get further into the projects.

Other than that, I have resolved to find some pictures of myself that I actually like so I can put it on this blog. Clearly, I haven’t managed that yet.
