Day 1

What I Did

Out of all the themes I sorted through, Tonal was the one that really stuck out for me.  I like how images you upload will be displayed largely across the whole page. For now I think I will keep the background color white. I don’t think I will change my theme, but I will probably be making some minor changes like adding certain widgets, uploading a header for the blog, and changing my tag line.

Why I Did It

I chose this theme because the default fonts were the most appealing to me. The title of the blog basically means any occurrences I want to document and other various information I would like to publish. The theme looks clean, simple, and overall visually appealing. I really want the content I publish to be exciting and interesting to my readers – something that will stand out (hence the tagline for now). I’m really into the way images are displayed on blogs; this theme will definitely suit my interests.

Bringing the site to life

What I did

Since last year, I have already had my own personal blog, so creating a new one was quick and easy. I added another blog to my account for this class, choosing a simple theme. I am pretty familiar with WordPress.com and really do love how accessible it is to the everyday blogger.

My site title is temporary, but I have decided on “Being Ariana” for right now. I’m not too happy or attached to it, so I am hoping I can change the title soon. However, I do like my tagline and plan on sticking with this decision. The chosen tagline is: “Writer, designer, thinker”.

Why I did it

Whenever I work with design, I always aim for a minimalist aesthetic. Even on my own personal blog, the design is simple, so I chose a similar plan with this portfolio. Unfortunately, since the best designs are expensive, this is also the easiest route for now. I plan to add widgets to make my site more appealing.

I chose my site title because I know for sure that I want to incorporate my name in a unique way. I’m hoping my name helps make my blog memorable. As for now, the current on is a work-in-process.

The tagline was created with the intention of being a very brief and simple summary of who I am, matching the look and feel of the blog. Writer, designer, thinker are important aspects of my identity and what I like to do. In the future I want to include a bio page, but at first glance, my tagline is meant to give readers a taste of who I am.

What is HTML?

Hello friends, welcome to my blog!

Last semester we had to keep and update a blog and I really hated it.  But after a summer of maturity, I have realized the use of keeping such a journal.  Today in class we set up a wordpress blog. Thankfully, I already had one but that does make writing this post a wee bit harder.

What I did…Why I did it [last semester]:

I chose a simple theme, not because I’m a simple person, but because when I look at a text, I usually just look for…the text.  Crazy, right? Since I am not one for Kindles and books with all kinds of pictures, I want my audience to be able to get to where they need to go quickly and effectively.  Yellow is a color that makes me happy because that is my mom’s favorite color and she is my favorite.  The picture captures two of my most loved pastimes: walking around at Christmas time and spending quality time with my dear fiance. I chose this because I pretty much live for those things and this class actually makes me quite sad.  No, not because of you all, but simply because I am really not good at this computer stuff.  Since I’m nervous, I need some reminders of why I pretty much wake up every day.  I don’t mean for that to sound morbid, but technology just makes me really anxious. I was never good at languages in high school (though I know four of them) and computer language appears no different.  Hopefully at the end of this semester I will be able to fully answer my own age-old question: what is HTML?

9/1/14

What I Did

Today in class, I set up my initial blog. I signed up for WordPress, and I created my profile with a blog title and tagline. I also started to customize my site by selecting a theme and adding a picture of my own to my header.

Why I Did It

When choosing my blog title and tagline, I tried to choose things that were catchy but also direct and to the point. I titled my blog “Rebecca’s Writing” to make an alliterative, catchy sound. For my tagline, I wrote, “A site dedicated to my thoughts, photos, and more” to try to give a quick and simple snapshot of what would be featured on my blog. When I started customizing my site, I kept in mind that I want my design to focus on photos from my study abroad trip I took this summer. For example, my header photo is one I took in Cinque Terre, Italy. Because these photos are very colorful, I chose a simple theme to make them pop.

What I did

Today, I set up a WordPress account. I followed along with the instructions provided and established my site to be used as a portal for this semester. I chose a theme to complement my portal as well as make it visually interesting. I also titled my site and gave it a tagline.

Why I did it

I chose the “Hemingway” theme. I prefer simple, classic designs and the “Hemingway” theme fit this bill. It is visually appealing while not being overly stimulating. It is eye-catching and also subtle. I didn’t want to get too hung up on the title and tagline so for today I named my site simply “Maddi’s Portal” and the tagline is “A site for English 3844.”

Post for 9/1/14

What I Did

  • I set up this blog.
  • Named it My Blog.
  • Decided on not having a tagline.
  • Decided on using the Tonal theme

Why I Did It

Today I set up this blog.  I decided to name it tinnysong.wordpress.com because I couldn’t really decide on a good name.  I also named it “My Blog” because I couldn’t think of what else to name it.  I’ll probably have to go back and change that, as well as add in a tagline.

For appearance, I decided to use the Tonal theme because I liked its minimalistic look and the simplicity of the design.  There isn’t a lot of extra things going on, and I liked that.

Decisions

What I Did

Today I set up a second WordPress blog. I chose the same theme and color scheme of my previous blog. I named my blog “Important Writing” with a tagline saying much the same things.

Why I Did It

I chose the theme for the same reasons I chose it several months ago. It’s a very simple theme and the sample posts were very well balanced. The color scheme, white with shades of green, is soothing and low stress. I’m not crazy about my personal words being displayed, so having a low stress outlet is nice. I’m not really sure why I chose the title, except that it’s a mildly sarcastic way to remind myself to actually try.

A Little Bit About Ali

What I Did…

I choose a minimalistic theme for my blog that had mainly neutral colors in the theme. I decided to pick my name for the title of the blog because, after all, the blog is about me. I have not come up with a final tagline for my blog, but I will be thinking about that in the classes to follow.

Why I Did It…

I went with a minimalistic theme because I am a big fan of simple, clean and neat. While I like color I  feel that too much color can take away from the general idea of the blog. My main inspiration for the minimalistic and neutral coloring came from Starbucks. I love doing my homework there because the atmosphere isn’t bland. I enjoy working at Starbucks because I am able to get a lot of work done but I don’t have to do it in a place that is completely silent. When I do homework there I put on a Pandora station and just sit and read or write until I am finished.
