Blog Post September 1, 2014

Hello and welcome to my WordPress blog.  Though this is my first WordPress site, I have created sites through BlogSpot.com and Strikingly.com.  I envision this blog similar to a portfolio where I will be storing my work throughout this semester.

Sarah

What I Did:

I started my blog today, by picking a web address.  Today I created my blog and made a number of important decisions.  First, I decided on a web address based on the user ID that I commonly use, sarahfy.  Second, I titled my blog and choose a theme to support my simplistic mentality for this blog.

Why I Did It:

The decisions I made today are important because they are setting the foundation of my blog.   Thankfully, WordPress makes it easy for me to change the title, theme, and even web address if I think of a better idea in the future.  To start, I choose my web address because my original idea of my first and last name was already taken.  Second, my blog title is simple, so that I don’t distract from the content.  I have not thought of a creative tag line yet, and will add one once I think of one.  Finally, my theme is simple with a background of natural colors.  I love the natural colors of the outdoors and how they contrast reader’s experience reading my blog on their computer.

Blog for 9/1/14

What I did

Today, I created my blog. I chose the name steph14vt for my blog. My tagline is “Hokie. Band Geek. Foodie. Grammar Nazi. Crafter.” I used the Quintus theme, which has a striped maroon border and simple neutrals where the text goes. I hope to add pictures soon. I chose some that I want to use, but they’ll need to be resized first.

Why I did it

I chose the name steph14vt because that’s my url and the site suggested using it. Honestly, I didn’t know what else to call it. My tagline functions as a simple description that communicates a few things about me without getting too verbose. I like Quintus because the background will match the pictures I plan to use (I’m a Marching Virginian, and we have a big maroon stripe on our uniforms), and the neutral colors are simple, which means they won’t distract the reader from my content. I also like the column layout, because my posts are reasonably separate from all of the hyperlinks. It seems user friendly.

The Beginning

What I Did

Today I started this as my second blog. Most of the decisions I made today are subject to change as I organize my ideas, thoughts, and plans for the class. But – to start off, I chose a theme and a header picture, and made my first blog post for your enjoyment! I also chose a name for my blog, which is a hard task to do with such an exciting year ahead of me.

Why I Did It

I think the theme I chose is a good pick because it highlights one main picture where I can force a lot of color into my page without being too distracting. It’s nice and simple aside from that photo. The picture I chose is a view of Florence, Italy from the top of the Duomo in the center of the city. It was one of my favorite views when I studied abroad there this summer, and I cannot wait to see it again one day. It shows colors beautifully from the orange-roofed buildings to the stark blue sky. I named my blog “Third Year’s a Charm” because I have just started my Junior year of college and I’m excited for what is to come, so I thought this play on words might be fun way to show that general idea.

First In-class Post: What I Did, and How I Did It

What I Did

Since I had already had a WordPress Blog-site for a previous class, I simply logged in and began to edit the content, theme, and “About.” I placed all previous blog posts into the “trash” to clean up the site and start from a clean slate. I have chosen to use the current theme because it appealed to me and was more bold than the other free themes. Most all of the other themes struck me as airy and either too busy, or too empty (either of which could cause the usefulness and usability of my site to be hindered.

How I Did It

To change my theme I first accessed the blog dashboard. I then dropped down to Appearance, and clicked Themes.Once in the Themes menu,  I then selected the ‘free’ tab located on the right hand side of the page header. I then found the theme I liked and clicked it. from there I used the “Customize” option to edit my blog site title, subtitle, and about page. Afterwards I also chose to add a page to the blog where I will be recording the timeline of my class projects.

9.1.14

What I Did

Today on my WordPress blog I altered the name, headline, and theme. While these still may change, for now I picked a simple name for my blog and used my name. For my tagline, I wrote a brief description of myself- “virginia tech student. prelaw. professional writing.”. I picked a theme called “Hemingway Rewritten,” which is one of the free themes offered by WordPress. To quickly customize the site, I made menu’s visible and changed the default background and text colors. My next step will be to continue customization of the site, by expanding the menu and adding an “About Me” page.

Why I Did It

As mentioned above, the title of my blog is simply my name. While this is not exactly creative, I think it’s the best route to go because this is a blog to showcase my later projects and efforts in this class throughout the semester. It’s like an online portfolio, so it makes sense that it should be titled with my name. I chose a tagline that sums up my academic career because it gives a brief and quick description of the purpose of this blog. The theme I chose, Hemingway Rewritten, was aesthetically pleasing and not too busy, which allows the focus of the blog to remain on the content. While quickly customizing the site, I also set up the home page so that newest post would appear at the top. As this is a site to track progress throughout the semester, that seemed to be the correct way to organize.

Getting Started on Web Portals

What I Did

Today I created my blog on WordPress, selected a theme, and changed the settings. I changed the pictures used on the front of the page to some aircraft because I love aviation. I also tinkered with the settings, choosing how my name will appear when I post, altering the email notifications, and I created a tagline.

Why I Did It

I chose a theme that allowed for multiple pictures on my homepage, but did not distract too much from the actual content of my posts. I plan on updating the images on my homepage to new pictures of planes and helicopters as the year goes on. The web layout is simple, allows for headers, but includes enough space for pictures. My posts will appear on my homepage, right beneath the headers, a feature that I preferred because it allows readers to view the content of my page without having to click or load any additional pages.

Adventures to Come

Oh hello there, I hadn’t noticed you came in, you’ve caught me at such an interesting time! Where to begin, well my name is Reece and I’m on my last year at Virginia Tech. So you’ve found me quite on the cusp of great change, and you’ve found me excited. Excited for the my upcoming blossoming forth into the wide, wonderful world. In May when I graduate I will also be commissioning into the United States Army, so my adventure will begin at once. Whooshed away on orders from Uncle Sam I’ll see the world from the back of blackhawks and the turrets of tanks.

This links into the theme I chose, a bold, beautiful open sky full of potential and promise. To me this theme represents the future, my future specifically, and the alluring hint of adventures fast approaching.

My first WordPress

What I did

This is the first WordPress that I have ever created and I can now say I feel comfortable creating, designing and posting on my new blog. It was a little difficult at first but once I got the hang of it, I was able to do so much. I started by picking a theme that fit me and what this blog was going to be about. Once I chose a theme the first thing I wanted to do was pick a meaningful picture.

Why I did it

I chose a Virginia Tech and more importantly a Lane Stadium picture because it has a special place in my heart and I wanted to show that by making it the focal point of my blog. I specifically picked this theme because it had every design element that I looked for. I wanted something that was clean and easy to read, but also have my own touch and customization on it. I am happy with how my blog is starting and I look froward to the rest of the semester where I continue to customize, explore and post on my blog.
