9/15/14 Class Happenings

What I Did

I added a video to my The Marching Virginians page and removed an image. I also added some additional text to the page and renamed it. I did minor proofreading on the About Me page, centered the square photo on the bottom, and linked it to my The Marching Virginians page. I added photo and video credits to my Site Information page and divided the information into Formatting and Media Credit sections. I also added the image that I removed from my The Marching Virginians page.

Why I Did It

The video says a lot more about the band than I can in words, and I think that a page about a performance group should include a performance. I added text that referred to the video and schedule so that the reader could find what they were looking for and have information about the performance. I changed the name to The Marching Virginians because I wanted the focus to be less on football, in the interest of focus. I added photo and video credits to the Site Information page so that I wouldn’t be plagiarizing. I divided the information into sections because the page was previously just an ugly block of text with one image, and it needed more white space. The change also makes it easier to find information. I added the image that used to be on my The Marching Virginians page because I wanted to keep the image on the site and the Site Information page needed more color and interest.

9.12.14

Today is the final workshop day for our web portal projects! Over the last two weeks we have certainly covered a lot of ground. After today, I am much closer to finishing my project, but may still need a little time in the grace period to make the site as polished as I would like it.

What I Did

I think the biggest change today, and what I spent most of class working on, was the addition of my “Travel” page. Read below to see why I consider this to be such a positive improvement to my blog!

Why I Did It

fb6733c7106401ac5387c57c0c1160f1I added the travel page for a few reasons. First and foremost, I’ve been struggling with ways to really make this site unique. As a Political Science student, I don’t have a web or design portfolio I could add. I’m not particularly interested in football, and I don’t have a particular fascination with any one band. But what I do love is to travel, and I’ve been some cool places in the last couple of years. Adding these pictures to my site gives a good idea of something I’m really interested in and something unique about me. Not many people have been to Israel!

Oh, Asian Food….

So my boyfriend works at a local Asian restaurant, and will occasionally bring home food from this place. I say Asian, because as far as I know, this restaurant doesn’t keep to any one ethnicity in their cooking. They’ve got a bit of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. And it’s delicious.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Asian food as much as the next white girl, but I have never loved it so much. Over the last few weeks, I have discovered that it is my favorite. I just can’t go a week without something that is almost too spicy, made of noodles, or over rice. It’s becoming a problem, because not just any Asian food will do. Now, it must be real, made by someone who was raised on this cuisine like the owner of this restaurant.

It does help that Boyfriend is Korean and a chef. He will make me food. Mmmm food.

The post was written for the sole purpose of filling in a page. There are no pictures because I ate everything before I remembered I wanted pictures. Oops. The name of the restaurant is Cafe Makong in Blacksburg. It’s wonderful.

What I Did, Why I Did It

What I Did

So far, I’ve made many changes to the site.  I’ve again changed the theme, and am now running the Elegant Grunge theme.  Also, I am using a few widgets – about.me, Instagram,  Twitter, a calendar, and a contact information graphic in the footer.  I’ve also added a menu with links to pages to About Me, Interrogate an Interface, Remix a Story, Revision Plan, Site Information, and Resume.

Why I Did

I changed the theme because the previous ones I used did not offer the option of a clearly seen menu to offer links to my pages.  Also, I believe that the theme’s colors of beige and grey provide a sense of neutrality and simplicity.  The widgets offer a way to further engage the visitors to the site by providing information about me.   Visitors to the site can see the previous four Instagram posts, and the previous  five Tweets.  The calendar provides visitors with a way to view my previous posts, and the contact information at the bottom of the page provides a location and a phone number.

What I Did

Today, I added the “Site Information, Project 2,3 and Final Project” pages to my site. I also moved some of the content around on the “About” page.

Why I Did It

The pages were added to the site because they will be a necessity later in the semester when each project is finished. Some changes were made to the layout of the “About” page in order to make it look more organized.

Jazzing Up my Web Portal

What I Did

I felt that my site was mostly complete at the start of class, so I ventured out to find new ways to add some flare to my page without distracting the user. I added some photos to my gallery, set the order as random, and added a music player to a page on my site to play a song. I also proofread my posts and ensured that I had completed all of the requirements.

Why I Did It

I was sifting through my gallery to make sure all of the features worked, and I realized that the order was not set to “random,” so my photos were showing multiple pictures of the same plane in a row. This was an issue because I wanted to have a different ship or aircraft with each new picture, so I learned how to use the “edit gallery” tool to add some more pictures and to alter the order. I also researched WordPress help pages and figured out how to add a song to a page, but not make it play on my homepage, which many users cite as a major distraction. I chose the song “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, which is the theme song of the cult-classic Navy pilot movie “Top Gun.” My peers seemed to really enjoy this song as I had to play it a few times before it worked on my page, and I think it really ties in my “Multimedia” page.

adding the finishing touches

What I did

In the final stages of making my site, I made a few changes and added a few features. First, I made the headings in my blog posts and on my site information page larger.

For my final site, I wanted to add something extra to take my blog to the next level. I had a few ideas to add to my about page but in the end, I decided on two additional pages within my about page. I added a travel page with pictures I’ve taken at some of the favorite places I’ve been and a short description. On the menu, I put the travel page as a drop down menu under the about page. I also added a link to the travel page within the content on the about page.

The other page I added is a list of all of the books I’ve read this year. Within the bookworm page, I added a link to my Goodreads profile for those who were interested. I also put this page as a subheading under the about page and included a link to the page within the about page.

Why I did it

I made the headings a larger size because I wanted them to stand out more. Making the headings larger makes the pages more visually pleasing.

I added the additional travel and bookworm pages because I wanted to add something more to my site. I also wanted to make the site more personal, and these two pages help to show more of who I am. I added the travel page because I love to travel, as I mentioned in my about section. Adding this page with the pictures gives insight into where I’ve been and some of my favorite places I’ve traveled to.

I added the bookworm section because I feel that it is a somewhat unique part of who I am, and I wanted to share to add some personalization. I also love seeing the visual representation of all of the books I’ve read this year with all of the different covers. I wanted to incorporate my Goodreads profile into my site in some form. Originally, I had the Goodreads widget, but I felt that it was out of place when it appeared on every page. For these reasons, I decided to just include a link to it for those who would be interested within my bookworm page.

I added these pages to the menu as subheadings to the about page because it made sense to place them there logically. They would have been out of place elsewhere. I added the links within my about page for easier usability and more convenience.

Fighting With WordPress

Honestly, it hasn’t been that bad. The title of this post reflects the last ten minutes of my dealings with this rather wonderful hosting site.

What I Did

I tried to make a menu to consolidate my projects’ pages under one tiny area to keep them out of the way, but it didn’t work. For now, I have given up. I am nearly positive that my theme doesn’t support menus in that manner, and that’s ok. I’ll probably play with it later. I also filled in my Site Info page, added links between pages, and edited some visual things.

Why I Did It

Basically, I wanted to make sure I had all the requirements for a decent project in this class.

Right now, that’s all I’ve got for this blog post. This whole thing is coming together pretty nicely.
