Day 5: The final edits

What I Did

  • Between last class and now, I uploaded all of my portfolio items and examples.
  • In order to upload documents, I used the tool Scribd, which allowed me to import my documents for free, and embed it into WordPress.

Why I Did It

  • I did this to take my blog to the next level and make it usable for future portfolios. I wanted my blog to have an extra layer of complexity to it. Now, not only can people see what I did, but they can easily read and view my examples.

What I Still Need to Do

There’s a lot of small things I still need to. This weekend, I need to focus on completing:

  • Updating About Me page with more information and pictures
  • Putting all my info for the Site Information page, including theme, Scribd, Widgets, ect.
  • Organizing menu bar/projects

Taking Criticism

What I Did

Since our class on Monday, I added two more pages to the mix; the project pages. There is one for project 2, Interrogate and Interface, and one for project 3. I also reviewed the information that I received from fellow classmates and tried to take it into consideration.

Why I Did It

I added these pages as part of the web portal project guidelines. I think that adding more pages also adds depth to my site. The user now has more to explore. One of my classmates noted that I have a repetitive button on my page. She said that both the “Home” link and the title of my page both bring the user back to the home page. I considered removing the “Home” buttom because of this, but then decided not to because some users may not think to use the title of the site as a button. I think having a link that declares that it will take you home is important for usability of the site; it’s simple and common.

TO DO

My next task is to look into adding some type of anchor at the bottom of the page. If I cannot add an anchor link, I would like to be able to add a menu that serves as an anchor. I just want the user to be able to navigate the page without too much hassle, and as I add blog posts, it will only get longer, so the scrolling will take more time. When it comes to my design, I think I have come to a happy place. I really like my color scheme and my photo. I think that since I have a static header photo, I will look into adding more photos to my actual posts in the future for more visual effect. I also want to add more modes of communication so I am trying to find ways to do that.

9-10-14

What I did

Since we last met, I added all the correct pages and wrote an “about me” paragraph for the about page.

Why I did it

Having the webpages added, even without content, helps me see what still needs to be done. Also, the “about me” section is very important to a personal blog!

What I still need to do

I still need to write the content for the site information page. I also need to add an extra page, which I am thinking will be a portfolio that showcases my work as well as my resume. I think that I will also play around with the widgets some more to choose the best ones that will enhance my site. I would like to add more images to the site.

Day 5: Monday Improvements

What I Did/ Why I Did It

Since Monday I have made a couple changes to my blog. I have added a portfolio section tab to give my blog a stronger focus to my writing. I also added a section that explains the purpose for my blog posts and how I want my site to give insight into work that I have done from classes that usually is not shared beyond the classroom.

What I Still Need to Do

I still want to add more pictures and personal elements to the blog. Who knows, I might even change the theme around a little bit. I am really bad at making decisions so I find myself editing and changing my blog around quite a bit!

Fat Stacks of Widgets

My most recent changes to my WordPress include the use of widgets. I am very excited about this. I have already added a widget to like my WordPress on Facebook (for which I set it up its own Facebook) and a section for contact information. I think some of the things I need to work […]

What I did

Today I didn’t do a great deal of editing on my blog. It was a peer review day so I explored other blogs and commented on them. I saw some inspiring blogs and may have to flesh out a couple of new changes to my blog based on them!

Why I did it

It was assigned, but it was also educational. I appreciate this assignment for that very reason. I hope I was able to give valuable advice to my peers and contribute to their success.

It’s all coming together…

Today I did not do a ton to my blog because I was a busy beaver helping out my fellow classmates.  I did manage to add my Instagram site for readers to click on.  I thought that was wise because if they were curious about my life or wanted to see more pictures, they could automatically be transferred to the ones that I deem important.  I could also gain more instafollowers…

I also added a site page which tells readers about my theme and gave picture credit where credit is due!

Something I did not get to today but am hoping to get to on Friday is the silly footer widgets that have been pestering me.  It is showing that I have two footer widgets with search bars, comments, etc. I obviously only need one.  I’m sure it’s a simple fix, but will probably need some guidance to get it all sorted out!

The One With Where I Added Categories

What I did…

After Monday’s class I was taking a deeper look at my blog and noticed that I hadn’t categorized any of my posts since I began this blog. I decided to go back and make categories so people could more easily find the various types of posts that relate to one another. So far I have two categories, “The Ones That are Reflections” and “The Ones That Are Class Assignments.”

Why I did it…

I wanted to categorize my blog posts to make it easier on myself when I need to go back and remember what I did when I did it. This will not only help me when I go to write my memo, but will also help my readers navigate my site easier.

What I need to do…

Right now I am at a stand still with my blog. I can’t decide what to do next and am not sure what else should be done. I am hoping that the comments I receive from my classmates will help me figure out what additional information I need to add and any changes that need to be made.

9/10/14 – Remaining Blog Work

What I Did

Today, I peer reviewed 2 other blogs that my classmates created. I also looked at the feedback I received from my peers and started making some final touches, like adding a photo and reordering my menu bar.

Why I Did It

I got two really good suggestions from my peer reviewers. One was to put my “Site Information” page last on my menu bar, because it logically comes last in significance. The other one was to add a photo of myself to the series of photos on the sidebar so that readers can connect my face to the blog without having to visit the about page.

What I Still Need to Do

Before turning in my blog, I have to complete a few final things:

  1. add a picture of myself to the sidebar
  2. proofread for mechanical accuracy
  3. proofread for conciseness
  4. proofread to make sure that all links work
  5. check for ways to make site more multimodal

Other than that, I am basically done with my blog!
