Project 3 Update

What I did

Today I worked on finding the youtube clips for my beginning and ending of my video. Finding Nemo is a Disney movie so I wanted to make sure that I had the correct beginning and end. I and still woking on getting everything together so I do not have a rough draft but I am working hard to get there.

Why I did it

I wanted to make movie video just like the original except with my spin/remix on it. I want to make sure that people feel like they are watching a real movie.

What I Did

I created the mock-up for my remixed magazine over the weekend using Google Drive. This mock-up includes an explanation page that discusses why I formatted the mock-up the way I did, as well as what page layouts the mock-up includes.

Since I decided that the magazine will be published by Belle from Beauty and the Beast, I also spent a lot of time this weekend brainstorming titles for the magazine that correspond to her particular story. Although I came up with a few cute ideas, I did not feel strongly enough about any of them to make a solid decision.

Why I Did It

I created an explanatory page for my mock-up not only to make reading and understanding my layout choices easier for the instructor, but also so that I know what my thought process was at the beginning of the project.  I know that the layouts that I designed on  my mock-up will change drastically as I actually begin to use InDesign to structure the body copy I write and images I find for the interviews, quizzes, advertisements, and public service announcements, and I wanted my mock-up to be a reference tool for my project when these drastic changes inevitably occur.

I began thinking of magazine titles because I really need to start designing my documents! The due date will be here before I know it, and I want to get started on my graphic design as soon as possible.

What I’ve done:

I’ve begun to plan out my storyline for project 3. I’ve also written down all the things I need to gather to make the video.

I need to:

  • Check out video equipment from innovation space
  • Write the storyline including: the news report and witness statements
  • Film myself giving the news report
  • Record the audio for voiceovers
  • Film the scenes to cut to including: Burruss Hall, the pylons, the drillfield, students crossing the crosswalk, and the witnesses giving their statements (one eye-witness standing in front of a building and one OSCORP scientist talking about the missing super spider)
  • Draw an amateur sketch of spider-man
  • Edit the video together using adobe premiere

Blog Post for November 10, 2014

Mock StorySince my last blog post, I have begun collecting content and various images of dining hall food.  I have asked friends to send me the foods that they are eating on campus, since my dining hall budget is limited.  I have begun collecting the images on a Google Drive folder and am outlining my story using a Google Doc.

I am also continuing my quest for quality sources.  So far the following have been gathered:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Very_Hungry_Caterpillar

2. http://www.businessinsider.com/virginia-tech-best-campus-dining-2014-10

3. http://www.princetonreview.com/schoollist.aspx?type=r&id=683#/

4. https://secure.hosting.vt.edu/www.hokiebucketlist.alumni.vt.edu/home.php

I created an Instagram account for @Very_Hungry_Catepillar and started following @VTAdmissions (VT Undergraduate Admissions), @VTPamplin (VT Pamplin), and @VirginiaTech.

On Twitter, I started following @HokieDining (VT Dining Services), @HungryHokie (Hungry Hokie), @FollowMeToVT (VT Admissions), and @VTPamplin (VT Pamplin).

Setting up the Order

This is a condensed timeline of events which will unfold through comments, posts, and other entries on my Middle Earth Facebook. I’ve only included the time line and not a mock up because of the medium I’m using, I felt a mock up of what is already going to be a mock Facebook page was […]

Mock-Up for Project 3

What I Did

Today, I experimented with the variety of mock-up tools listed in our class blog to see if I could easily use any of them to create a plan for my project. After careful consideration, I have decided that I will not use any of these tools and will simply use InDesign to create mock-ups for each page of my magazine.

Why I Did It

Although I will not use any of the mock-up tools I explored today with this particular project, I might be able to use them in the future for other projects. I decided to use InDesign to create mock-up pages of my magazine because I am most familiar with this platform. If I were to use one of the new tools, I would probably spend too much time learning the tool instead of working on my project.

I am very excited to begin creating my mock-ups and can’t wait to actually get started on my magazine!

Update for 11/07

What I Did & What I’m Doing

- I’m reread and annotated Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

- I’ll be finalizing which story I want to remix for my project since I was also consider another children’s novel.

- I’ll be creating a storyboard of the commercial video I plan to do

- I’ll be debriefing my professor on my final plans by next class on Monday (in an email)

Why I Did It

Since this project in particular encourages the use of creative outlets to tell a story, I wanted to be 100% sure that the story I wanted to remix was a story I was passionate about. One thing I love about Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go! is that it’s an uplifting story about being fearlessness, independence, and taking control of your life. I feel like the book’s message hits home to a lot of college students, especially the ones that are going to be graduating soon.

However, one of my biggest concerns is that conveying that kind of a strong message in a short clip might be a little too ambitious for somebody with a limited amount of resources. The book also centers around one character with a omniscient voice that carries the whole story from start to finish. On top of that, if I want to shoot a commercial video, then I would have to sell a realistic product that is related to the book. I would have to chose another children’s novel that centers around an object or product for a commercial video to be able to work. On the other hand, there are ad campaign videos that are made regarding social issues (i.e. the “smoking is bad for you” ads), so this is a viable option to consider as well.

Mock-Ups and Storyboards

What I Did

For my mock-up I completed a few legs of the journey for my Prezi presentation. I selected a large world map as the background for my presentation, which is perfect for what I am trying to display. I used Google Maps to properly identify the location of select cities on the map and labeled them with text. Then I found and chose screenshots from the movies to represent certain legs of the journey. I also found pictures of tourist attractions to place next to each city. For instance, I found a clipart picture of Big Ben to place next to London.

Why I Did It

Instead of making an outline of the journey, I decided it would be more beneficial to complete a few stops of the journey. I plan on using a consistent outline for each city, so completing multiple cities would help me identify what issues I might run into along the way. It also allows my peers who will review my project a chance to see what my project will look like better than if I had just created an outline of the journey itself. It is easier to fill in what the other stops of the journey will look like if a few of them are completed, rather than showing where the journey will be taking place.
