11.14.14

Since last class, I’ve made a lot of progress. The website is really coming together, and I’ve identified all the stories that I want to publish. I went through and created the timeline on the website by creating posts where I’ll fill it in with all the text. The next thing to do is to go through and write all the copy for the site. That will be the hard part because I’m not used to writing for a newspaper/ or gossip column.

splicing and dicing

What I did

Since Monday, I have worked on splicing my clips together in iMovie. It is a tedious process that must be done with precision and attention to detail. I am working on getting the clips that I want from the full length clips and putting them in a rough order. After I have all the clips I want and think I need, I will put them in a more concrete order. As of now, I have a rough cut that I am still editing. I am still realizing more clips that I need to fill in gaps in the movie. So far, I am using about 4 movies and one tv show. I might incorporate more.

Why I did it

I am right on track with the schedule I set up for myself. Right now, I have a rough cut that I need to continue editing and adding shorter clips to make it cohesive. I am still looking for clips and splicing them because I have a mental image of what the final product will be, and I really want to achieve that. I want it to be the way I pictured it, but I still have a lot of editing to do before it gets there.

Wednesday/ Friday

Please forgive any typos I don’t spot and fix, my hands are a little more tempermental than usual.

Today I…..

Have begun compiling notes for articles and some of the pieces of evidence I’ll be needing.

Why I did it…

I have many articles that I need to have ready to format every soon. Formatting is always one of the most time consuming parts, so I’m probably going to have to write the majority of these articles outside of class. My pace needs to be quick.

What I need to do next…

Finish these articles so I can start figuring out pictures or documents I’ll to go with them. I’m not creating an entire newspaper, only the articles, so I’ll have to figure out how much I want to include. After all, maybe my journalist doesn’t like pictures.

The One Where I Didn’t Read My Email and It’s Freezing

On Wednesday I didn’t read my email which led me to coming to class when we didn’t have it. Today I came to class, but I have yet to thaw out from my walk here. Welcome Winter!

What I Did:

So far I have completed Robin and Barney’s boards as well as Ted’s architecture board. I feel good because this means I only have four more boards to work on. I also changed the name of Robin’s Canada board to just focus on the Vancouver Canucks because they are Robin’s favorite hockey team.

Why I Did It:

I finished Robin, Barney, and Ted’s boards because I wanted to give myself more time to devote to my last four boards. Right now I’m not entirely sure what angle I will take on those boards so this will give me time to think. I changed Robin’s second board to be all about the Canucks because they are more significant in her life than Canada as a whole is.

Brick Wall

So, I’ve run into some issues with my original plan. I downloaded Flash and started watching some of the tutorials, but the actual software started affecting my computer. It’s slowing everything down, and shuts down once I start trying to complete any actions.

I’m really upset because I’ve wanted to learn Flash for a while and I really wanted to challenge myself, but this might not be the time to do it. I would totally still go for it if I could spend time in innovation space, but I want to be able to work on it over break and my computer is obviously not happy about that.

That being said, I think I will try to go in a new direction. I had an idea to create several gifs and present them in list form, similar to Buzzfeed, but that’s so far from my original idea. I also am considering making an infographic, because I’m really interested in design and I think it would be fun. The problem with that is that I need InDesign to do that. I’m thinking maybe I could use iMovie (which is on my computer) to present some clips and other facets to describe the point I want to get across. That way, I can still have a video as my final product, and maybe I can still play with the way the facts are presented. Still thinking.

Whatever I decide to do, I will definitely have some sort of a draft by Wednesday!

Friday, Nov. 14

Since the last time I worked on the project, I’ve created a fake Facebook site with the tool The Wall Machine, and I’ve began creating posts.  Examples of what I have so far are from the beginning of the story, in which Dory meets Marlin and introduces us to her problems with short-term memory loss.  So far in the remix of the story, Dory and Marlin have become ‘friends’ with Bruce the Shark, and have been invited to the Facebook event “Fisheaters Anonymous”.

I did this work because i wanted to get started on the actual presentation of the project.  Having re-watched the movie and with the story fresh in my head, I wanted to start transforming my script into something tangible.

Project 3 Update

What I did

Today I was able to start working with iMovie and figuring out what I wanted to do and how I was going to do it. I watched some basic “how to” videos on youtube and other sites on how to best use iMovie. I learned a lot in a short amount of time and there are some many things I can use to make my movie the best possible

Why I did it

I have never used iMovie so it was important to learn the basics and ropes of the program before I start my project. I wanted to make sure I knew how to use iMovie confidently before I started just throwing things together in the program.

Monday 11/10

No catchy title today, since my brain is all wrapped up in things like my story, “Interstellar,” and various other personal things. Interstellar was pretty awesome, by the way, I totally recommend it. I might have spent all morning talking about if certain things were physically possible and what not. Anyway, this is supposed to be a work day. And I’m working on it.

What I did

Today I worked some more on my version of a story board. Because my project is basically a set of articles with some other pieces thrown in, I organized it all as an outline, which i typed up so that I can move things around, add pieces, and make notes.

Here it is, all ready for your perusal.

I have also begun drafting several articles, including the obituary. I’m still trying to figure out what names and personal information I want to use, however, which is quite distracting.

Why I did it

Every story needs a good outline, and mine could get complicated very fast. It isn’t coming together quite like I thought it would, and I need to reconcile my vision with my reality. I always planned on the obituary, inheritance questioning, and society articles, but I wanted to make the Cinderella aspect a little less of the star. That isn’t happening quite like I planned. I need to figure out where I’m going after the Ball article.

What I did instead of going to class

I used our regularly scheduled class time to watch some instructional videos about Illustrator on Lynda. I’m hoping that this will allow me to better utilize my class time, but I didn’t budget for it in my plan, so I might be spending some of Sunday at InnovationSpace catching up on things.
