Project #3 Update – 11/17

What I Did

Today I solved the problem of crossing the International Date Line and started working on the ‘other’ side of the map, showing the journey arriving in North America. I labeled the International Date Line and zoomed in from Hong Kong, China to a large area with an arrow in the Pacific Ocean. Then I had the presentation zoom to the other side of the 2D map and started work on the North American leg of the journey. As far as documenting sources, I plan on placing a text box in the corner of the map and then zooming to show the sources after the journey has been completed.

Why I Did It

I had to include a way to show the International Date Line because it is important to the story. I did not want to zoom in on the corner of the map because it would look awkward, so I set the frame to include Hong Kong, China and the IDL, along with an arrow showing that the journey is going through the Pacific Ocean. The path then quickly jumps to North America, so although it does backtrack, it goes quickly enough that it does not detract from the journey. Finally, I think that placing the sources in corner will be similar to a works cited page, being displayed following the content itself.

Moving Along

Today I made a lot of progress on my project. I made a common decision to start by using InDesign to create an info-graphic about the material I am focusing on. It’s looking pretty good! I cannot use InDesign over Thanksgiving break because I do not have it on my computer, and I have already used a trial of it for a previous class, but I plan on getting most of the work done before break so that I can move on to the next part over break – which is working with ThingLink, a website, to make my graphic interactive. I can do that from home as long as my InDesign work is done. I used Innovation Space for a few hours today to work on it.

I’m not sure which parts I will make interactive yet, but I think that will add another dimension.

I will definitely use the interactivity to cite some of my sources at the bottom of the graphic, so that viewers can click right over to more information.

What I Have Done & Why I Did It:

Today in class I started looking into the pictures needed for my project further. I decided last class that I wanted to change the outlet for my topic of Beauty and the Beast. I have found a website that allows you to create fake snap chats, and I am working on setting up a fake Instagram account to take screen shots for the Prezi.

What I Have Done & Why I’ve Done It:

Today I decided to change the layout of my project. I have been sick this past week, so I have not been able to take pictures of Virginia Tech campus to make a video. I want to be able to work on this project over break, so I decided to make a project that could be completed on the computer. Now I am changing it to Beauty & the Beast takes over Social Media.

I will still be incorporating risk into this presentation because I will be using many modes and sites in the project. I did not choose to pick one form of social media, but I chose to pick multiple outlets to add dimension to the project. Although I have changed my project from its original form, I believe that this option will be more entertaining and relevant to the audience I am presenting to, or the students in our classroom.

What I did today (Nov. 17th)

Today i continued my research on Jack Tales and worked on the planning of my video project, listing off the things I will be gathering up in order to shoot my raw footage as well as other “to-do’s” for the project. I am currently a few days behind schedule due to work for other classes, however over the course of the next week I should be back on track. My current plan is to accomplish most of the filming by the end of Tuesday of next week (Nov. 25th).

Brb, moving into InnovationSpace for the next month

What I Did

I spent five hours in InnovationSpace this weekend and two class periods working exclusively on the cover of my project, and I just started the last image. I created a background, selected a font for the title, and drew four princesses and the princess, along with backgrounds for three of the princesses plus the last one, who I intend to finish at InnovationSpace. I finally figured out how to use illustrator. Personally, I think my images don’t look much better than what I could do in Paint in half the time, but I’m going for a childish look. I realized that I’m in way over my head, and I’m going to log a crazy number of hours on this project. My bus was a couple minutes early, so it drove off just as I got within site of the bus stop, so I got an early presentation slot. I also realized that the cover is the only ridiculously image-heavy portion of the project, so I’m hoping it’s all downhill from here.

Why I Did It

I spent all of my free time on Sunday in InnovationSpace because I designated Sundays a catch-up day in my plan, and I’m already hugely behind even with the equivalent of six extra class periods of work outside of the classroom. I only left at 8 because they closed. I worked exclusively on the cover because that led me to spend the vast majority of my time in Illustrator, and being immersed in the program for so long helped me to better understand it. I’m designing images that look childish because the original story is intended for children, and I think that the kiddie look contrasts nicely with the bad princesses.

Credits

For my project, I’m just using a lot of images from Google as well as quotes from various authors. I might be using some YouTube videos as well to post on Belle’s wall. So I think I’ll either state where all of my information came from at the beginning of the presentation or immediately following. I could upload a status giving credit where it is due and have Belle say something funny about it but I’ll see how that goes over in peer review first.

A Masterpiece is Born

I have begun putting the posts onto my fake Facebook for my project and it is a little more challenging than I had expected. I enjoy the challenge though and I also really like the subject matter so it is really as enjoyable of a struggle as one could imagine. Getting everything in chronological order […]
