Creating Memes and GIFs…

I created this from a scene of the movie Hot Fuzz. The context is that it seems every time I go somewhere and bring my dog, someone asks a question along the lines of “why do we need the dog?” Usually they ask this as my dog is breathing heavily three inches from their ear, and ever since I first saw this movie, my response has always been “it’s not the dog we need.” The point here is that the person and dog are inseparable and one is needed to have the other. Functionally this GIF is ok, but could use subtitles so that the viewer actually knows what is being said. Is there a better GIF generator? I will look into it, haha!

Animated GIF: Cats can’t jump

For today we were tasked with creating an animated GIF. I went ahead and made a funny GIF that I thought everyone would enjoy. It is a GIF of a cat trying to jump off of a car and onto the roof. It misses completely and slides down off the car. It is a quicker GIF that only lasts three seconds, I did this to get the full effect. I If it was any shorter then I don’t think everyone would have enjoyed and laughed as much because some parts would have been cut. Same with if I extended it longer then it wouldn’t have the same effect and people would have lost interest.

http___makeagif.com__media_9-29-2014_zGIshcThe gestural change by creating an animated GIF versus a regular meme is huge. With the gestures, I wanted something that was simple, easy and funny. I didn’t want to make it too complicated, and by having a cat attempting to jump and missing worked great. The gesture aspect gave me an effect that I would have had if it were just a still image.

She Poked His Heart…

You Poked My Heart

This is a gif I made from a video I recently watched where a boy and two girls have an argument about the weather. As you can see, the girl eventually pokes him, to which the boy sensitively responded with: “You poked my heart.” It’s impossible not to smile by the end of the video. The video is a viral hit with over 8 million views on YouTube.

The GIF

Today we created gifs, which as a person who uses tumblr and other time wasting websites, I find pretty awesome. Even though we used a really simple, does-it-all-for-you website, it was really cool just to say that I’ve made one.

Gifs, as opposed to memes, are much more involved. When creating my gif, I had to think about the timing, and exactly which movements I wanted to include in the final product. I wish I could figure out how to add text, but that’s a bit advanced for me. Maybe I’ll figure it out later and re-upload.

How To Get Away With Murder

Above the gif, and I’m pretty happy with it. The way Viola Davis is turning around and the camera zooming in is exactly what I wanted to capture. I wish the trailer had included the second before she turned around (from the actual show), but it works will nonetheless, I think.

smilingdog

This is a gif of a dentastix commercial. Every time I see this commercial it cracks me up. I particularly remember the first time that I saw this commercial, it shocked me to see the dog go from normal to smiling with real teeth. I thought it would make for a great gif and I think it turned out well. Being able to use a gestural mode of communication changed the way I designed a gif from the way I designed the meme because I was able to use motion to sort of secure the punchline. In the meme, its one text line at the top and another at the bottom to separate the joke/punchline. Here it is a few seconds of movement that separates the joke and the punchline.

Cutest GIF of them all

I chose to GIF one of my favorite videos on the Internet. I was trying to capture the best part of the video–there is a lot of movement in the video, and this is the one that captures the most movement in a few seconds. This video would appeal to anyone with a heart, because a french bull dog puppy is the cutest one of them all. I think it worked pretty well, but would have been cooler if somehow it were a seamless loop. I also wish the quality of the video had been better, because the video seems a little dark. I believe the gestural mode enhanced the GIF.

The GIF that I created appeals to anyone because, come on, who doesn’t love a room full of corgi puppies? I decided to pick a video clip that had lots of movement so that the GIF would flow seamlessly. Using the gestural movement makes it seem like the puppies are continuing to run into the room over and over again — pure happiness.

The process of making the GIF involved selecting a YouTube clip, trimming it down to the right proportions, and selecting 3 seconds as the time of the video clip before it starts to play again.

gif

I wanted to make my GIF cute and funny. So, I chose a short video of a dog doing what dogs do best- being silly. The dog in my GIF is hiding from taking a bath. I think the GIF succeeded in what I was trying to do, because the dog goofing off makes people smile. Including the gestural mode changed the design of my GIF because I had to think about what seconds of the video to include – I had to make sure that it made sense and communicated the right thing.
