Independent Out of Class Work http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/11/24/independent-out-of-class-work/ Mon, 24 Nov 2014 05:53:50 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=189 ]]> So far over this weekend, I’ve created the Facebook posts up until half of the movie.  One of the constraints of my tool is that it’s unable to generate some organic Facebook posts, such I’ve been taking screenshots and altering them with Photoshop.  I’d say I’m making pretty solid progress on the project, and should be done with it in a few days.

Friday, Nov. 14 http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/11/14/friday-nov-14/ Fri, 14 Nov 2014 15:48:09 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=187 ]]> Since the last time I worked on the project, I’ve created a fake Facebook site with the tool The Wall Machine, and I’ve began creating posts.  Examples of what I have so far are from the beginning of the story, in which Dory meets Marlin and introduces us to her problems with short-term memory loss.  So far in the remix of the story, Dory and Marlin have become ‘friends’ with Bruce the Shark, and have been invited to the Facebook event “Fisheaters Anonymous”.

I did this work because i wanted to get started on the actual presentation of the project.  Having re-watched the movie and with the story fresh in my head, I wanted to start transforming my script into something tangible.

As for a storyboard, I’ve found that I’m just more effective in just writing down text when I’m brainstorming and trying to figure out what direction I want to take on a project.  For this reason, I actually just created a Google Doc and started writing some of my thoughts down.  I’ve got a general background on the facts and plot of the story and how I’ll be converting what happens into things on Facebook.

Here is the link to the work I’ve done so far: https://docs.google.com/a/vt.edu/document/d/1mx5cj1y4QSz5wFPX8tmpUp7GN2DGFLhOWf2ywgtH9UE/edit?usp=sharing

October 29 http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/10/29/october-29/ Wed, 29 Oct 2014 14:57:41 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=179 ]]> So far on this project I’ve done such research on Hamlet by reading through both Shakespeare’s original play and also the play by Tom Stoppard.  I’ve also looked at sites such as thewallmachine.com to generate a fake Facebook news feed.  I’m thinking about doing a chronological sequence of events, with the characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as the main characters and Hamlet commenting occasionally.  I’ve also been doing some research on the movie version of Tom Stoppard’s play, and I think I would use that as a primary source, rather than the production of Hamlet on stage.  One difficult thing would be gathering assets, as I think it would be difficult to get images or graphics for this story.

I’ve also thought about changing the story that I remix.  I’m thinking about remixing the story of Finding Nemo, with the sources being the movie and the musical production of it.  I’m looking to do some more research into that, and looking at if it would be a better idea than Hamlet/Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.  Depending on the research I do, I might switch to remixing Finding Nemo.

Project 3: Remix a Story http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/10/28/project-3-remix-a-story/ Tue, 28 Oct 2014 20:01:54 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=177 ]]> The story I’ve picked is about the characters of Rosencrantz and Guidenstern from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.  The stories is already kind of remixed by Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which focuses on the events of Shakespeare’s play through the lens of those two minor characters.  The part of the story I want to focus on is when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern play the question game with Hamlet in trying to figure out why Hamlet is acting in such a peculiar manner.  I was going to frame this as sort of a bulletin-board psych profile, with maybe the social media components that were used in the Little Red Riding Hood example.

Here are the links to the different versions of the story.  I’m using the Shakespeare’s original play Hamlet, Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and the American Shakespeare Center’s production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Project 2 Presentations Day 1 http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/10/13/project-2-presentations-day-1/ Mon, 13 Oct 2014 15:12:16 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=175 ]]> Maddi G’s presentation on Comic Master really intrigued me, and I think it’s the interface I would like to explore further.  I’d never really come across a website that allowed you to design a comic series before, and the site seems pretty straightforward and easy to use.  It’d be a good tool for an extremely informal presentation, and seems like an extremely easy way to communicate a story.  While there are some constraints that Maddi talked about, such as the lack of variety in themes and rigidity of the one-page structure, its novelty is what intrigues me to explore it further.

Wednesday, October 6 http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/10/08/wednesday-october-6/ Wed, 08 Oct 2014 14:55:34 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=161 ]]> What I Did:

I worked on my Affordances and Constraints page, and I’m almost done.  I want to include one or two more screenshots, and maybe include a conclusion weighing the two.  I also included some critiques on how the interface used various modes of communication.

Why I Did It:

I wanted to finish that section because it was the last part (I think) that I needed to work on for the essay.  I wrote about the modes of communication because I wanted to relate it back to the chart, and critique it by that rubric and not just my own judgment.

What I Still Need To Do:

I’m thinking about writing a conclusion to the Affordances and Constraints page where I summarize the arguments behind both and come out with a conclusion of my opinion.  I also need to work on my presentation now; I’m thinking of using the video I embedded along with some screenshots, so I might have a head start on it.

Monday October 6th http://fall14blogs.tracigardner.com/2014/10/08/monday-october-6th-2/ Wed, 08 Oct 2014 14:14:32 +0000 http://tinnysong.wordpress.com/?p=159 ]]> What I Did:

I started doing the “Interrogate the Basics” page for Project 2.  This involved looking at the various modes of communication on my interface, and analyzing it for its effectiveness.  I also included a video at the end detailing the process of searching, playing, and using action buttons on a specific audio file.

Why I Did It:

I included a video because I wanted to include a visual demonstration of how the various action buttons on the audio player reacted after I clicked on them.  I decided to use a video rather than screenshots just to save space and have all of the information at the same place.
