December 1, 2014: What I Did and Why

Today I continued to work on my Remix a Story project. I’m still running into some problems with the tool but the project is coming a long really well and I’m almost finished. At this point I just need to compile my citations, finish up the story, and add a few photos. Even though the tool has a lot of shortcomings, I’m happy with the way it’s looking overall.

So I did some work over break at home, and this is my selfie to prove it. I uploaded it at the last minute because it’s a little embarrassing, but what selfie isn’t amiright?

Revision Plans

As far as my project goes, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of need for revision. The only parts that aren’t meeting my standards are the ones limited by the constraints of the actual tool I’m using. After talking with my peer editing group, we decided that the strongest part of my project is the dialogue between the characters. I’m really going to play up on the dialogue and continue to strengthen it because it is the one aspect of the project that I have complete control over in the tool. I’m also making use of images to show what Beast is buying Belle to win her attention so that visual aspect will break up some of the text on the page and give some color as well. I was going to try a YouTube video on Belle’s wall to add the musical aspect in as well but I don’t think the tool supports it. Instead, I’m going to have Beast post some lines of poetry on her wall, finally winning her favor. I’ll also have Gaston interrupt and try to discredit him and Belle shut him down to show she’s starting to give in to Beast.

For my project, I’m just using a lot of images from Google as well as quotes from various authors. I might be using some YouTube videos as well to post on Belle’s wall. So I think I’ll either state where all of my information came from at the beginning of the presentation or immediately following. I could upload a status giving credit where it is due and have Belle say something funny about it but I’ll see how that goes over in peer review first.

Today I worked on the actual Fakebook site and it’s kind of been a struggle. I tried to put in all of Belles “friends” and give them profile pictures but you can’t resize images on the site and sometimes it does something weird to the size of the photo you upload. It also won’t allow certain photos to be uploaded and randomly replaces the photos with a weird image from the site. Working with the rest of the site is pretty simple but I’m going to have to figure out a way around that constraint. I still need to add all of her friends, update her personal information, add a cover photo, and start writing posts on the wall but I have a pretty good start.

I also did a rough outline of my story on my storyboard to help me with the Facebook posts and the streamline of information I need to get on the page.

Today I have been working on my storyboard for the Remix A Story project. I researched the information you would see on a normal Facebook page and tried to fill in that information for my fictional hipster Belle. I looked up the top hipster colleges in the campus and decided on NYU and also researched the greek life there so that I could develop Beast’s character more. I also found some pictures for Belle’s profile. I’ll finish it this weekend!

I have developed a general timeline of work to help me balance this project over the next few weeks:

M, November 10: Mock-up, Storyboard, and/or Outline—Skeleton Story (word document); work with fakebook a little to get general info
W November 14: Flesh out Skeleton—photos/video; fill out fakebook account with actual story line
M, November 17: Presentation Sign-up—continue working on storyline and adding details
W, November 19: Rough Cut for Peer Feedback; Project 3 Revision Plan.
F, November 21: Selfie showing yourself at work—have works cited done and fix problems found in peer review
December 3 -10: In-class Presentations.
W, December 10: Project Due by 11:55 PM

What I Did:

I’ve still been looking around at different forms of Beauty and the Beast and different tools I may use to tell my story. I’ve been grouping different sets of ideas together so that I have a few choices on how to do the story. We also went over a lot of the technicalities of the project during class today so now I have all of those tasks running through my head and how I’m going to gather and keep track of my information.

Why I Did It:

I want to collect a lot of ideas for this project so if one thing doesn’t work I have a few backup plans. I also really need to keep track of where I’m getting all of my sources and assets so that when it comes time to give credit where credit is due, I am able to do so easily

A Beastly Remix

I chose to do Beauty and the Beast as my story. There have been so many obvious “remixes” of this story but I think that there are many other stories that capture the essence of this timeless tale without being quite so overt. These are the archetypal bad boys in every romcom out there– the ones whom we think are quite “beastly” at the beginning of the movie, but turn into prince charming and score the girl. So I want to use that to develop my story and highlight different ways a dude can be beastly. Or I might flip it and make the girl the beastly one. I think I want to do this in diary-like blog posts from either the perspective of Belle or the Beast.

I thought Storify was a really cool tool to gather information and share. It was also really smart to connect it to other social media sites to both gather personal information and trending information, as well as spark interest in other social media users. I may end up using it for something in my collegiate career eventually.
